How Live Translate tokens calculation?
Here is Token Calculation on a chat example:
Customer: How can I return my order? → no cost (input)
Translation: ¿Cómo puedo devolver mi pedido? → 7 tokens (output)
Support Agent: You need to fill out a return form. → no cost (input)
Translation: Necesitas completar un formulario de devolución. → 9 tokens (output)
So total tokens calculation: 16 tokens.
Token Calculation Rules for Different Languages:
1. English
Each word is generally 1 token (e.g., 'Hello' = 1 token).
Punctuation and spaces may add tokens (e.g., 'Hello, world!' = 4 tokens)
Common contractions (e.g., 'don't' = 2 tokens) may count as multiple tokens.
2. Chinese (中文)
Each Chinese character is typically 1 token (e.g., 你好 = 2 tokens)
Punctuation marks (e.g., ',' or '。') may count as separate tokens.
3. Japanese (日文)
Kanji and Kana (Hiragana & Katakana) are typically 1 token per character.
Compound words (e.g., 'こんにちは' = 5 tokens).
Some spaces and punctuation marks may add tokens.
When translating from Chinese or Japanese to English, token count usually increases due to longer English words.
When translating from English to Chinese or Japanese, token count generally decreases.
